Back-To-School Supply Carnival & Info Fair
3:00 - 6:00 pm - Admin/Outreach Center
Free school supplies at 10th annual Back-to-School Supply Carnival & Info Fair this Thursday
For the tenth year, the people of Bucyrus United Methodist Church are giving free school supplies and clothing to area children from financially-strapped families. The Back-to-School Supply Carnival and Info Fair is being held rain or shine this Thursday, July 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Bucyrus United Methodist Church Outreach Center, 216 Hopley Ave., Bucyrus.
Everything is free in the three areas of activity: supplies and clothing distribution, informative displays by area organizations and agencies, and carnival fun.
Elementary-aged children receive the basic supplies on their classroom list, plus a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, underwear and socks. They must attend Bucyrus, Colonel Crawford, Wynford, Wayside, or Fairway schools, or be homeschooled. Children must be accompanied by an adult to receive their supplies and clothing.
Over 20 organizations and agencies that serve families in Crawford County are in the Info Fair, sharing detailed information about the services they provide. Most displays include games, prizes, free drawings and novelty items. People can expect to talk to representatives of local law enforcement and emergency services, the Girl Scouts, Bucyrus Public Library, Avita Health System, Affinity Health Works, CONTACT Crawford County, WIC, Job & Family Services, Community Counseling, the Crawford County Health Dept., King’s Kids Bible Instruction and others.
The Carnival features free games and prizes, entertainment, refreshments and more. Special treats include face painting by the Crawford County Arts Council, music by Sonix Sounds DJ Services and the Kiwanis Dunk Tank. A fire engine, police and sheriff cruisers and a Bucyrus City School bus are there to be explored. Free New Testament Bibles are given out by the local chapter of Gideons International.
The Carnival and Fair activities are in the parking lot and on the lawn of the Outreach Center. In the event of rain, they will move inside. Families are asked to park in the Bucyrus Elementary School parking lot. Handicap parking is available at the southern edge of the church parking lot. The Outreach Center is located at the point of Hopley, Walnut and Woodlawn avenues.
Over 500 children are expected receive supplies and over 1,200 people enjoy the carnival. The people of the church raise over $4000 each year for the carnival. Grants and contributions from the business community also help meet the families’ needs. Volunteers working the event are from the church and community at large.
Bucyrus UMC is led by Pastors Mike Corwin and Becky Smithey. Everyone is welcome at Sunday worship services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. at the Worship Center, 227 S. Walnut, Bucyrus. A staffed nursery is provided. Free food and clothing are available Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Outreach Center.
