Bucyrus United Methodist Church Mission Projects
Family Ministries: Let's lead our families together!
We at Bucyrus UMC celebrate and support Christian families in their faith journey. Parents don’t have to be Bible scholars or know all the answers. You just need the willingness to lead your family and follow God's guidance. Spending time together experiencing God’s work in your lives should be one of your most important goals as a family.
We encourage our families to work together on community projects, such as: One Starry Night, National Night Out, Light the Night for Jesus and Change the World-Paint the Park. This gives them a chance to focus on others (and on what Jesus calls us to do) while spending time together. It's also a great teaching opportunity that will enrich the community and lives of others.
Parents are always welcome to participate in youth and children’s activities, as are the children in adult activities, such as Sunday School class outings and Bible Studies.
SINGLES IN OUR CHURCH FAMILY
Are you single and therefore your own family? You are not alone at Bucyrus UMC. Everyone who walks through our doors or reaches out to us in some way is considered a member of our Church Family to be celebrated and supported. Spend time with us on your faith journey!
Youth Ministries: Let's walk in discipleship together!
At Bucyrus UMC, we strive to guide teens in forming a personal relationship with our Risen Lord, and to walk beside them in discipleship. Led by the pastors and adult leaders, our youth are actively encouraged to share their faith, serve others in Jesus’ name, be Christian leaders and join in Christian fellowship.
The youth of Bucyrus UMC are continually involved in projects of their choosing that reach into our church, community and beyond.
Outreach
The youth share their faith within the church by taking part in church projects and acting as mentors to new youth in the church. Their outreach to the community includes: a Cross Walk in which they carried a cross across Bucyrus and passing out more than 1,000 pairs of flip flops on the Bratwurst Festival midway as they shared God’s promise of hope and eternal life.
Leadership
Empowering youth with skills to be Christian leaders now and in the future is an important part of our youth ministry. Our youth hold leadership positions within the church, on the Mid-Ohio District Youth Council and the East Ohio Conference Council of Youth Ministries.
Reaching Out to Other Christian Youth
We regularly hold events with youth from other churches, plus attend district retreats and the East Ohio Youth Annual Conference (YAC). This exposes the youth to literally thousands of other Christian youth, giving them the opportunity to witness the effect Jesus has on their lives.
Fundraisers
So no youth is excluded due to finances, costs of retreats, YAC and outings are covered by the Youth Fund. The fund is fueled by youth-operated fundraisers, such as pay-to-park lots at the Bratwurst Festival.
Youth Service Fund
Ten percent of all funds raised by our youth goes to the Youth Service Fund to support youth-focused mission projects locally, nationally and globally.
Children's Ministry: Let's build a foundation together!
“Point your kids in the right direction — when they're old they won't be lost.” Proverbs 22:6 The Message
Jesus made it a priority in His ministry to draw children closer to God. He showed us the importance of providing children with a firm foundation for their faith. At Bucyrus UMC, we give children a consistent Christian experience that helps them build a Christian life and grow toward a permanent relationship with our Savior.
Our Children’s Ministry is lead by the pastors with the assistance of experienced adults and youth. This ministry is fulfilled through careful planning, communication with parents, intentional relationship building, patience, a sense of humor and a commitment to the call to make disciples for Jesus.
Highlights of a child’s Sunday-morning experience at Bucyrus UMC include:
Children’s Message
The pastors take time early in the Worship Service to chat with “the munchkins” about the message of the day and how it applies to their lives. His use of humor and terms they can understand make this a treat for both the children and the grownups – and it sometimes includes candy!
Children’s Church
Following the Children’s Message, the children are broken up into age groups for Children’s Church. The leaders bring the message of the day to life for the children through scripture, prayer, games, crafts, an abundance of fun and lots of love!
God’s Little Angels Choir
At least once a month, the congregation is treated to an enthusiastic performance by our God’s Little Angels choir, made up of children in the Early and Older Elementary classes.
Sunday School
Our Children’s Sunday School classes include: Pre-school, Early Elementary and Older Elementary. The teachers use God’s Word and Jesus’ teachings, plus crafts and music, to show the children how much Jesus loves them and how they can be His friend for life.
Adult Ministries: Let's grow and work together!
In addition to weekly Sunday School classes and Bible Studies, we encourage adults to advance their spiritual growth and support mission work through United Methodist Women and United Methodist Men.
United Methodist Women (UMW)
Mission is the primary purpose of UMW, the largest denominational faith organization for women. They also foster spiritual growth, develop leaders and advocate for justice for children, youth and woman worldwide. Women at Bucyrus UMC meet on the second Thursday of the month at 1pm at The Pelican Coffee Shop. They gather at the meeting table in the back of the store. The Bucyrus UMC unit supports several local, regional and global missions. The women also host most church dinners, including funeral dinners. For more information, call the church office.
United Methodist Men (UMM)
The mission of UMM is to “support spiritual growth among men, helping men to mature as disciples as they encourage spiritual formation in others.” The focus is not inward, concentrating only on those who attend a set meeting, but outward to all men, assisting them to engage the process of spiritual growth. For more information, call the church office.
Music Ministry: Let's praise the Lord in song together!
“…be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:18-19 NIV
The organist is playing a vibrant rendition of a familiar hymn for today’s prelude to the worship service. The pastor notices people in the congregation mouthing the words. He watches and is moved by the Spirit as they mouth “Great is thy faithfulness! Great is Thy Faithfulness! ...” He stops the service, holds up a Hymnal and instructs everyone to turn to Hymn 140… to sing again - this time aloud - so they can let loose their heart-filled praise to the Lord.
Later in the same service, he is smiling again, this time because the balconies are bouncing with toes tapping and shoulders swaying to a praise song that has the entire church energized and moving with the Spirit.
Moments like these happen frequently at Bucyrus UMC. We are blessed with music that lifts our souls, opens our hearts and unites our spirits. Our inspirational mixture of traditional and contemporary hymns offers everyone the opportunity to give thanks and praise to our Lord through song.
More than 75 singers and musicians enhance and empower our worship experience with their talents and energy. Several opportunities to serve through music can be found in our adult choir, praise team, hand-chimes chorus, children’s choir (God’s Little Angels) and special music moments. See the calendar for rehearsal times, or contact the church office for more information.
Christian Education: Let's learn and teach together!
Bucyrus UMC’s Christian Education program offers both formal and informal opportunities for learning and teaching in which you may develop a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We engage people in order to inform, form and transform them into disciples of Jesus Christ who put God's Love In Action.
Christian education and formation happens when people of all ages and stages:
- Learn the Bible
- Accept God’s grace
- Grow in Christian faith
- Become part of a Christian community
- Answer God’s call to Christian living
BIBLE STUDIES
Everyone is welcome to learn more about God’s Word through our various Bible studies. Check the church calendar or contact the church office for details about current or upcoming studies.
First Place Bible Study
First Place Bible Study is a year-round women’s study that meets Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at the Admin/Outreach Center. It is a Christ-centered, health program that emphasizes balance in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual areas of life.
Ladies' Bible Study
Tuesdays at 6:30 pm at the Admin/Outreach Center
Men’s Bible Study
First and third Saturdays at 8 am at the Admin/Outreach Center
Pastor-led Studies
Special study sessions led by Pastor Mike Corwin and Pastor Becky Smithey are offered during Lent and Advent, and at other times as the Holy Spirit influences him.
SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES
Our Children’s Sunday School classes include: Pre-school, Early Elementary, Older Elementary and Youth. The teachers lead the children on their faith journey by instructing them on God’s Word and Jesus’ teachings through lessons, scripture lessons, music and activities.
The Adult Sunday School program is founded on the small-group approach to learning and growing with God’s Word. The three adult classes – Peace Fellowship, Ever Faithful and Kingdom Seekers – are all instructed by experienced laity.
Newcomers are invited to visit each class and select the one whose approach matches their learning preference. Classes frequently meet outside the church for fellowship and fun with their families.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS)
We co-sponsor VBS with neighborhood churches of different denominations. Children from 3 years to sixth grade take part in lessons, snacks, crafts and games. Youth serve as assistants and role models to the children. On Tuesday night, we move to the street for games, food, fun and fellowship during National Night Out.
